A new venture for the business this year, is the offer to rent out a power meter to enable you to take the next step in your training this season. Training with power has significant advantages over training with a Hear Rate Monitor (HRM).
Training in the past, on shorter, high intensity intervals (2 minutes and below) was tricky to achieve accurate readings due to Heart Rate Lack (this is another phase for the time it takes the heart rate to react to the stress it’s being placed under). The heart rate could take up to 20 seconds to react accordingly to the power been placed therefore we could be often thinking that we were training in the right zones but in fact we weren’t putting out bodies under enough stress to allow for the adaptions within our training plans.
Using power is a great way of measuring what is actually happening at that moment in time. Power produced in its simplest terms means what is been pushed through the pedals, anytime, anywhere. Unlike Heart Rate, which can be affected by a number of factors like stress (work & personal life), time of day, diet, caffeine and the list goes on. So you do literally get more bang for the buck.
Power meters come in various guises from pedal based, wheel based, crank arm based and indeed the full on chain set. Making a purchase for a power meter is a serious investment; It will without a doubt, enhance your training so that you can achieve more effective training but lets be honest it can have a serious affect on your bank balance too. The cost of a power meter is expensive ranging from (£500 for a Stages crank arm) up to £2,900 (for a SRM Chain set). So maybe before you take the plunge and fork out lots of hard earned cash, maybe speak to us at SB performance about power meter rental. That way, the cost is reduced dramatically and you will get an idea on how training with power can help you and decide the way forward from there. We even have experienced staff who have attend British Cycling (BC) Power based workshops to be on hand with any advice and also BC Level 3 coaches to advise you with training should you wish to take it further.
